Choosing the Right Type of Wooden Basin

When designing a new bathroom or kitchen, it’s easy to get caught up in buying the gadgets and appliances such as the ranges, dishwasher and refrigerator; but one of the most important aspects of either of these rooms is, of course, a sink. Choosing the right kind of wooden basin for your home and needs will save you a lot of time and stress a few years down the line. The perfect sink should not only look stylish, but also make it easier to keep the counter spaces clean and make food preparation a breeze.

There are several aspects to consider when purchasing a sink and each one is as important as the next. Materials, size and space are key factors and will play a big role in how well the basin functions in your home.

Ensuring that the sink fits into the surroundings is vital; a basin that is either too large or too small will look out of place and disrupt the appearance of the room as a whole. The sink also needs to be large enough to handle the general everyday tasks of the kitchen or bathroom. The key is to make sure that the basin is big enough without it taking over too much of the counter space; a balance between the two is the thing to keep in mind.

The depth of the basin is equally important; it needs to be able to fit in the amount of dishes you will be using, but also needs to be shallow enough to allow for storage space underneath it. Some people like to add a basket strainer on the side of their kitchen basin so that the plumbing for the faucet doesn’t get in the way of washing up.

It is becoming more and more common for people to have two compartments to their wooden basin, as these types of sinks make for easier and less cluttered washing up and they can also be quite useful when there are two or more people around the sink at once. A double wooden basin will also be less likely to overflow, as the piece that divides the two compartments is low enough to allow the water from one part to flow into the other. For larger households where the kitchen is constantly in use, there are even three compartment basins available.

There are plenty of options in terms of the materials used for a basin, including stainless steel, cast iron and ceramic; however there is nothing quite so elegant as a wooden basin. These are fast becoming a favourite choice with people who are looking to combine the vintage and the contemporary. Wooden basins tend to add a certain charm that a stainless steel sink simply cannot do. Of course, practicalities must be taken into account as well; a sink made from wood should be treated before installation, but after that, it is simply a case of taking care of the surfaces, as you would with any type of kitchen or bathroom basin.

Celebrity Home Renovations – Which Stars Have The Greenest Homes?

We all have ideas in terms of the types of homes we’d live in if we suddenly had the almost unlimited funds of a Hollywood movie star, and for many of us, room for all of the expensive toys and clothes we’d buy might trump energy efficiency when it comes to daydream material. However, it is still good to know that in real life, as well as all the fancy swimming pools, expansive walk in wardrobes and decadent party rooms, some celebrities invest in making their homes green as well as stylish.

Here are some of the major celebrities who have incorporated innovative environmentally friendly approaches and technologies into their custom homes:

Johnny Depp

Celebrities don’t come much bigger than Johnny Depp, and if you were thinking his combination of talent and good looks already made him a little too perfect, it turns out he’s kind to the environment too! Johnny Depp owns several properties and incorporates green technologies into all of them, however the ultimate in green homes has to be his 35 acre private island in the Caribbean. Depp engaged leading conservation experts as well as designers to help him create a completely self sufficient habitat that works in harmony with the island’s wildlife. This is just as well because he’ll need to offset the carbon footprint created by actually getting there – his other main residence is thousands of miles away in rural France!

Orlando Bloom

Havens: Bk. 2: Celebrities’ Favorite Rooms: Celebrity Lifestyles

As a good friend of Depp’s following their time spent together working on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Orlando Bloom shares the same drive to do what he can to live in a green way (without skimping on luxury). The custom built London home he shares with his Australian wife Miranda Kerr was designed to use sustainable energy, including solar panels, and his admirable commitment to developing an environmentally friendly home reportedly cost him more than double what he’d originally planned to spend.

Darryl Hannah

Movie star Darryl Hannah, known for her starring roles in eighties classics like Splash, and more recently her memorable performance as one eyed assassin Elle Driver in Kill Bill, is almost as well known for her conservation efforts as her acting career. She owns a house in the Rocky Mountains that takes sustainable living to levels most people wouldn’t dare to try. This property is made of reclaimed wood, and is off the electrical grid – all the power comes from solar units. There is even a couch made out of a moss covered rock. Seriously.

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts’ 6000 square foot home may not sound like the poster property for green living, but despite being furnished with its own tennis court, pool and all the other celebrity trappings you might expect, this house is extremely green. Julia and husband Danny Moder invested around $20 million on renovating the home to make it more environmentally friendly, a project which included converting much of the vast roof to solar panels which now supply energy from the hot Malibu sun directly to Julia Roberts’ hair styling appliances.

Today’s guest author, Shawn O’Hara, works as an interior designer for Capital Building. He is a very creative person and strives hard come up with excellent home renovation ideas for his customers. He likes to cook in his spare time.

Three Inexpensive Ways to Give Your Living Room a Makeover

Giving your living room a total makeover can be expensive. That is, if you decide to purchase new furniture and furnishing. However, you can also give your living room a different look by simply rearranging things and reusing what you already have. Below are three easy ways that you can give your living room a total makeover. They’re inexpensive, so you get to save money and, at the same time, enjoy the same benefits of a new living room.

Change the Color Scheme

If you want the room to have a new look, then simply change the old color scheme. Say for example you want to achieve a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, and your white and blue living room isn’t providing that mood, then choose warm colors such as brown, cream, and off-white. The color scheme will make the room appear warmer and cozier.

Of note though; you have to take care that the room doesn’t appear too dark. Brown and cream color scheme tends to make a room appear darker, but you can balance the mood out by repainting your old furniture such as coffee table with a lighter shade. Instead of using dark curtains, use lighter ones instead. This will allow more light to pass through without sacrificing the coziness of the room.

Create an Accent Wall

Two-toned rooms can be a bit drab, but you can create an accent wall to make it more interesting. For example, the color scheme of the living room is light beige and cream, then you can simply repaint one side of the room with red paint. Red paint not only catches attention, but it also adds contrast to an otherwise boring space.

Living Rooms: Trends & Tradition

Living Rooms: Trends & Tradition

One tip though if you’re going to create an accent wall. Red is such a strong color, so you need to choose the focal point of the room wisely. For example, you have huge windows that open up to your beautiful garden, then paint that wall red. It “centralizes,” so to speak, the focal point, giving the room some sort of consistency. If you have a fireplace with interesting architectural details, then use that wall. Again, this highlights the fireplace area, giving the room only one focal point.

Accessorize Bare Walls

Hanging wall decors can be risky. Too much, and the room will look gaudy. Too little, and the room will look boring. However, you can achieve the right balance by placing the wall decors just right.

Don’t hang your framed pictures too high on the wall. The space below them will look incomplete. Instead, hang them low. For example, hang wall paintings closer to the sofa; this gives continuity to the design.

You can also group similar designs for more impact. For example, grouped abstract paintings hanging near a contemporary-looking fireplace provides a connection between two different objects. Again, this will give continuity to the overall design of the room.

You can easily make your living room look brand new by simply changing the color scheme, creating an accent wall, or simply rearranging the wall decors. They are inexpensive but will make your living room look more alive and newer.

If you’re having a hard time, you can simply consult with your local interior designer. They always have good ideas perfect for your living room.

Windows are Eyes to the Soul…Or are they the Other Way Round?!

If you are in the process of renovating a property, sooner or later your attention will turn to the windows. Do they need replacing and if so, with what? Windows can have a very large impact on a house. First and foremost they are both visually pleasing and set a house off beautifully; or they are ugly and bring the overall appearance of the house down. Then there is the economy that quality windows bring; double glazed windows save a lot of money on energy bills. The third advantage to great windows is that once they are installed they will need very little maintenance for a very long time.

It’s important to give your window choice a lot of thought before making any decisions and make sure you consult with lots of experts and get plenty of quotes. You’ll find prices vary quite wildly but you’ll also find that companies are willing to negotiate on their price if it means securing the whole job. Have a look online at window design – it has come a long way in the last few years and there are many more options than you may first think.

There are lots of styles of windows to choose from so think carefully before you go for the obvious choice. We’ll talk you through some of the more popular types here:-

Double Hung Windows

800px-double_hung_window

These windows are very popular indeed. They are split into two parts that work independently of one another and sit adjacent to each other horizontally. Only one can be opened and closed at any one time for safety reasons. They are a contemporary design and you can choose your own mechanisms so that they work perfectly for the purpose you intend them for.

Slider Windows

6237870828_7fdc766922

These windows slide open rather than in the traditional manner. They ooze style and individuality and are a great choice for bedrooms, living rooms, studies and kitchens. They are made of two vertical panes which each slide in a horizontal direction. They suit just about any room and their popularity is growing amongst architects and property developers.

Awning Windows

6238773883_44c3f1dd75

Awning windows are most popular for kitchens and conservatories. They open by tilting, but they are not able to open fully, rather they can only go around half way. This is to provide adequate ventilation in a downstairs room without compromising the safety of the house – intruders will not be able to get in to the house through the gap as it is simply too small. So you can leave them open at night to allow air to circulate in the house without worrying about the security of your home.

Which Material?

4821426989_f63f02a331

Older houses suit wooden windows which look really stylish and elegant. However they are probably the most expensive option and it can be really expensive to maintain. Most people opt for UPVC windows, although there are aluminium options too. Plastic and aluminium tend to be cheaper, and also easier to clean and maintain. We say if you have the budget, always go for wood!

Iconic Interiors: The Monochrome Trend

Striking, graphic and guaranteed to create an impact, the monochrome trend has boldly stood the test of time through the ever-changing eras of style. From the eclectic, geometric prints of the swinging sixties to the clean lines of masculine, minimalist design, black and white (along with all varying tones in-between) has become somewhat of a design staple. Influencing a range of design genres from textiles and fashion through to interiors and art, the iconic ‘colour’ combination is not only bang on trend for 2013 but it’s timeless quality will ensure that your look will not date.

For a look that encompasses both minimalism and opulence, create a sense of contemporary indulgence in any living space with a beautiful choice of textured and printed monochrome wallpapers from the UK’s leading wallpaper brand, Galerie Wallcoverings. Reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour, adorn walls with a sophisticated choice of styles including dramatic animal prints and snakeskin effects as well as damasks and texturized paneling to photographic prints of Hollywood icons, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. For a bold effect, embellish all four walls in a monochrome print such as the Natural Faux zebra pattern or a striking damask option from the Classic Silks Collection. A more subtle approach can be created with a feature wall in a tactile block tone from the Texstyle 3 range – the perfect way to add drama into a room without overpowering it. Complement this look with textured furnishings in neutral tones and high-shine accessories, creating a luxurious living space with wow factor.

Introduce injections of the monochrome trend into the bedroom with Jasmine Silk’s luxurious Mulberry Silk bedding. In sophisticated tones of black and ivory, the luxury range of pillowcases, duvets and sheets will give bedroom interior schemes a hint of sophistication and decadence, creating an elegantly luxurious place to relax and rest in. The soft, reflective nature of the silk adds a touch of femininity and tactility to a trend renowned for being masculine.

For a nod to 19th century classic design, create a Victorian townhouse-inspired monochrome floor statement with a choice of elegant chequerboard mosaic tiles from Topps Tiles. Perfect for introducing a touch of sophisticated period charm into a basic bathroom or brightening up an uninspiring hallway, choose from the stunning Victorian Mosaic porcelain tile with accent borders or the equally stylish Buxton ceramic tile which includes a combination of square, octagonal and decorative border tiles that allow a flexible choice of patterns options for a the perfect traditional floor.

4 Amazing Ideas For Creating An Enthralling Reading Room

If you are booklover and have additional space in your home, then why not convert that vacant space into an awesome reading room.

If you had ever thought of ways to utilize a vacant room, then nothing can get better than converting it into a good reading room. Believe me, reading room is an excellent means to utilize the extra space in your house where you can delve deeply into your favorite novels or books. Here are four amazing tips to help you create an awesome and enthralling reading room:

1.      Office vs. Reading Room

Reading room certainly is distinct from office, as you should create it only for recreation purpose. Office room includes workspace or desk. On the other hand, reading room must be a place where one can detach himself/herself from the daily hustles and bustles. Of course, you may add a desk in your reading room if you want to, but if looking to have a room with space for relaxing, then avoid incorporating office essentials. Note that office rooms are functional, whereas reading rooms are purely for relaxation and comfort. I would suggest you to lay flat a nice and cozy area rug in your reading room for cozy and ease in moving around.

2.      What to Incorporate

As you know that reading room is mostly useful for recreation, begin by picking a nice color for the walls. Keep away from bright or harsh shades. Instead, go for something that is soothing as well as relaxing. Next, ensure to shatter stuffs across the room to make you feel cozy. A pair of comfortable chair is certainly an excellent addition to your reading room. Further, I would suggest you to take your bookshelf in this room in order to get easy access to your favorite books in the room. Enhance the aura by including some nice aromatic candles for creating a soothing and warm ambience. Curtains and pillows too can add an exceptional feel to your room making it friendly and cozy.

3.      What you should not Incorporate

As you need to have a silent place that is free from any kind of distraction, it is advisable to keep away your mobile, laptop or computer from the reading room. Similar is the case with TV, as it will be a sheer distraction in the room. Your goal here is to come up with a place wherein you can indulge in some relaxation. Nevertheless, you can have a radio in your room, as many folks love to read while listening to music. Make sure that there are only a couple of seating arrangements, as you would not like the room to become a guest room or so.

4.      Pick the Finest Designs

A reading room can be of various designs and thus, a quick search on the Internet will lend you distinct results. In addition, there are various websites and blogs depicting some of the finest designs for reading rooms. Irrespective of the design you choose for your reading room, make sure that it makes you feel comfortable and cozy. For instance, if you prefer vibrant red colored wall, then go for the same or if you wish to have a couch, then have it. The goal here is to ensure that you are creating a wonderful and peaceful retreat, which is free from distraction.

Bespoke Furniture for your Living Room

For many people, the living room is the heart of the home, where they can relax, socialise with friends and family, or simply kick back and watch a film. For this reason, the type of furniture used in this room is especially important, as it must not only have a cosy, stylish look, but must also be comfortable enough for sinking into after a long day.

Bespoke furniture is the ideal choice for those who want to add some character and comfort to this room; you can have virtually any kind of design you want, allowing you more control over every aspect of the item, including the materials used, the colour, the style, the size and the shape.

When arranging the furniture, there are a few key points to keep in mind. It is important to create a focal point in the space and arrange the other pieces of furniture around it. This focal point could be any number of things; in some homes, it might be a window, a fireplace or a television, whilst in others it might be a coffee table.

In terms of what kind of furniture to put in this space, there are a number of basic items that can be found in almost every living room; these include a sofa and set of armchairs, a coffee table, side tables and a cabinet for the television. Other options for the room include a tall shelving unit along the wall; this is great for displaying books, photos and trinkets, which will make the room feel more welcoming and cosy.

The sofa and set of armchairs will usually take up most of the room, so it’s essential to choose pieces that really suit the space. This is where a bespoke furniture specialist can really make a difference; they can help by designing pieces that are perfectly sized for the space, so whether you need an L shaped corner sofa with specific measurements, or a set of wooden cushioned chairs which match the decor of the living room beautifully, a bespoke designer will be able to create the perfect piece.

The coffee table can be a focal point for the room, however it also functions as a practical item on which to set drinks on and keep items such as books and magazines, provided it comes with storage underneath. When choosing a coffee table, bear in mind that it should be slightly shorter than the height of the sofa seats, so that people can easily lean over to place a drink down.

As a general rule, the table should also be about half the length of the sofa, so that all of the articles of furniture look in proportion to one another. Side tables are also important, particularly for those who have larger families or frequent guests, as ideally, people should not have to get up to set their drink on the table. You can place them on each side of the sofa for convenience.

First Impressions Count! What Does Your Home Say About You?

You never get a second chance at a first impression. And while most people spend a lot of time and energy meticulously designing the interior of their home, that’s not actually the first thing that guests to your home will see! In reality, first impressions will be formed as soon as people who visit your house see the exterior of the property. This includes both the physical exterior of your actual house and your yard, driveway and garage. All of these things must be taken into consideration when thinking about the design of your home, so don’t be one of the people who falls into the trap of only taking care of the inside (although that is important too)! The following are a few tips that will help your home make a good impression on people.

Check Your Landscape

The first thing you want to examine is your yard- think about the difference between a healthy and vibrant lawn and one that is dead and brittle. What does this say about you? On a basic level, it shows that you don’t care about your lawn. In reality, you may care an awful lot about your lawn but just don’t have the time or the ability to take proper care of it. If this is the case, you may want to hire a landscaper, because you don’t want people to think that you simply “don’t care”

Exterior Paint

Quick & Easy Curb Appeal (Better Homes & Gardens Do It Yourself)

Quick & Easy Curb Appeal (Better Homes & Gardens Do It Yourself)

Next, look at the quality of paint on the exterior of your home. If it is faded or chipped, it may be time for a fresh coat of paint. You could consider changing colors or just sticking with what you’ve got, but either way- not taking care of your paint is a reflection on your ability to take care of your home, even if the paint is something that you have never even considered! In addition, the accents on your home- like shutters, the garage door, etc. must also be in good repair.

How’s Your Front Door?

Your front door is arguably a very important part of the exterior of your home as well. After all, every guest to your house has to pass through the door in order to even get to the interior of your home! Keeping your front door in good repair is vital, and you may want to consider installing a brand new front door. There are many different fashionable styles and color choices for doors on the market today, so you have plenty of options when it comes to how you want your door to look.

After taking these things into consideration, truly think about how important the exterior of your home is. If you want people to have a good first impression of your property, you may need to take these steps in order to ensure that happens. This is especially true if you are selling your home- potential buyers will form a “gut feeling” as soon as they pull up outside of your home, so it is imperative that you make sure that gut feeling is a good one and not a negative one. It could be the difference between selling your home or being forced to reduce your asking price, so make your decisions very carefully!

Curtain Walling: It’s More Than Just An Aesthetic

Curtain walling is an outer skin which can dress up a building to give it a modern, good looking façade while offering thermal protection.

So essentially it’s a well fitting coat for your building or even a sharp suit. Take a smartly dressed MD, he or she might not look so presentable in the buff. Fortunately their choice of clothing presents them in such a way that we’re unlikely to realise the horrors that lurk beneath. He is ridiculously hirsute and she is covered in tattoos.

Well turned-out

We use clothes to keep us warm and to make us look good or presentable for different occasions. For instance, the MD would not be so well received in the boardroom if he or she arrived in jeans and T-shirt that are favoured for casual weekends.

Elevating your status

In the same way we use clothes to elevate our status; curtain walling can be used for buildings. In the commercial world of big business your building must look as imposing as the size and calibre of your business. If you want to impress you need to wear your best gear and your building needs to follow suit (pun intended).

Glass curtain wall of the Bauhaus Dessau

Glass curtain wall of the Bauhaus Dessau (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

If you are a developer and expect to lease your building to top companies, you will want the building to impress and offer the perfect residence for good commercial companies.

What’s in a name?

Curtain walling may not sound glamorous but it delivers a great, contemporary look. First and foremost the aesthetic of curtain walling can transform the outside of a building. It envelops the existing structure in a lightweight exterior to give it the perfect finish.

Get the look

If your dream building has an ‘all-glass’ exterior this is the ideal way to achieve it. As the curtain wall bears no structural weight save its own, it can be manufactured from relatively lightweight materials. These include aluminium.

Let there be light

Over and above its aesthetic appeal, a glass curtain wall allows more light to penetrate deeper into the building, ventilation and protection from the elements, therefore reducing energy costs. Which we think you’ll agree makes good business sense.

The perfect finish

Glass curtain walls aren’t the only option, a lot can be achieved with lightweight aluminium too. Also copper and other materials can be used and are often favoured by architects for the effects they can create. Think luxury finishes of silk or satin in clothes terms.

Time for a makeover

We can all benefit from a wardrobe update from time to time. And a little help to battle the ravages of time and general wear and tear wouldn’t go a miss either. Your building is no exception. Curtain Walling is a great way to give its exterior a much-needed makeover and provide an extra layer to protect against the forces of Mother Nature. It can help maintain your building’s outer walls and help restore kerb appeal to make your company stand out for all the right reasons.
